J.K. Rowling’s Journey From Poor To Paid
If you have not heard of the Harry Potter series of books, then you must have been living under a rock since 1997 or you must have just landed down on earth. Author of the series, J.K. Rowling has created an astounding phenomenon with the Harry Potter series of books. It is quite possible that the level of popularity and success that the Harry Potter series has achieved was not predicted or expected. Nevertheless the success and popularity are real and have happened as such a level that truly no other books written have ever been so popular, other than the Bible of course. The series of 7 total books has not only turned book sales upside down, but has spawned a series of movies to go along with the books. While we are still waiting for the last book, The Deathly Hollows, to be turned into a movie, one thing is for sure: Harry Potter has made J.K. Rowling billions of dollars!
However, J.K. Rowling did not reach the success that she has today with Harry Potter over night. There was a lot of hard work that got her to the place that she is now. As a child, Rowling was an avid writer and reader of fantasy stories. She turned this healthy habit of reading and writing into a passion and continued to develop it throughout her life. In the early ’90s she married a man in Portugal and had a daughter. They quickly separated though, leaving Rowling alone to raise her very young daughter. She would then move to Scotland and begin working on her Harry Potter series. It was at that time that Rowling experienced a period of financial downturn, as she had to eventually get on government welfare. It is not known whether or not her diet changed because she couldn’t afford to eat much, but one thing is certain, she didn’t need welfare for long.
She got a book deal, after many rejections, and the rest is honestly history. The first Harry Potter book came out and it was a success. The ones that followed only continued to catapult the Harry Potter series into book stardom, leaving J.K. Rowling millions of dollars in her bank account. Although Rowling is rich, she still exercises the use of her philanthropy to help other who are less fortunate because she knows what being poor is like first hand. Rowling has not forgotten her humble roots, never will, and for that she is both loved and respected.
